Your first step into a career in diving: Become a Divemaster

You love diving, and you would like to share your passion with others? You want to be qualified to introduce your friends and other people to diving? You are willing to take care of others in the water?
Then your next step is to become a diving professional. To become a Divemaster you'll need to switch your focus and start to think about the dive for the others. This is possibly the hardest part of the course - but the more effort you put in the more you will get out of it. You will learn how to organize and guide dives, adjust them to the divers who are with you. You will spend a lot of time solving problems and making sure that everyone enjoys the dive. As a Divemaster, you are an assistant to the instructor. That means, you should be familiar with all the skills in demonstration quality - but it is more than that. You will learn how to prepare everything for a course, logistics, planning, and where your assistance can be most useful. The most important point will be to train you on assisting students with problems - understanding why they may struggle to master a certain skill, and help them to overcome the problem. It is probably the most awarding part of being a Divemaster, and this is what distinguishes you from a "regular" diver. And because people will ask you all kinds of questions about diving, there will be some more diving theory - you should be able to explain how a computer works, and why the heck you always want to pee when you are diving!!! The Divemaster course consists of two parts: the Dive Guide course and the Science of Diving Course. There are two ways of getting there, and it all depends on what you want:If you are an experienced diver already, and you don't plan to work full-time in diving, you can do the course in a long holiday. It will be lots of work and lots of fun, and you can get all the necessary training in four weeks or even less, depending of how experienced you are as a diver when you start. If you want to be included in all the dive center work; want to learn how the "real" job is; want to gain a lot of experience - then you could come in for an internship. In this case you complete your course in exchange for working for us, and gain experience along with the training. This needs at least three month, if you are still an unexperienced diver more. Places for this are limited. Once you see that you are able to handle everything a Divemaster can do, you should consider to do the next step and become an Assistant Instructor or enroll directly in your ITC. |
